The Harmony System
Interactive simulator — tap Builder to stack, Spender to cash in
Harmony is the core mechanic that defines the Monk. It's a builder/spender system where attack spells either build Harmony (up to 5 points) or spend all stored Harmony to massively boost their power. The base bonus per Harmony point is 7%, and it doubles with each additional point consumed.
Harmony Simulator
💡 VIRTUE HEALING
Every time a Harmony point is gained or spent, the lowest HP% member of the Monk's party is automatically healed at zero mana cost. This passive healing scales with Magic Level and character level. Solo monks heal themselves. This is what makes monks valuable party members even when focused on DPS.
RUNES DON'T BUILD HARMONY
Using runes does not generate any Harmony points. The Harmony system heavily discourages rune usage — stick to your builder/spender spell rotation for maximum effectiveness.
The Three Virtues
Tap a card to select — only one is active at a time
Virtues are toggle spells unlocked at level 20 with promotion. Only one can be active at a time. Each grants a passive bonus that is doubled while in the Serene state.
💡 WHICH VIRTUE TO USE?
Solo hunting: Virtue of Justice for maximum kill speed. Switch to Sustain if you need survivability at harder spawns.
Team hunting (off-heal): Virtue of Sustain amplifies your passive Virtue Healing and Mass Spirit Mend by up to 70%.
Team hunting (DPS focus): Virtue of Harmony for the best sustained DPS rotation since the Harmony refund lets you cycle spenders faster.
The Serene State
Serene is the Monk's powered-up state, indicated by a violet bar or circle near your character. While Serene, all Virtue effects are doubled and auto attack bonuses from the Way of the Monk shrines are also doubled (up to 50% total auto attack bonus).
SERENE RULES
- Solo: Monks who are not in a party are always Serene.
- In a party: You lose Serene only if you have party members nearby AND 6 or more monsters are adjacent to you.
- Focus Serenity spell (level 150): Forces Serene for 7 seconds regardless of conditions, grants max Harmony, and resets all spender cooldowns. 10 minute cooldown.
💡 SERENE IN PRACTICE
In most solo hunting scenarios you're always Serene, which means your Virtues are always at full power. In team hunts, you only lose it when swarmed by 6+ monsters — so positioning matters. Stay slightly behind the Knight to avoid triggering the threshold.

Every fist weapon sorted by level requirement. All are monk-exclusive except the Staff. Attack values from our item database.
💡 WEAPON UPGRADES THAT MATTER
Attack jumps happen at: Traditional Sai (30) → Sai (60, atk 36) → Pair of Iron Fists (80, atk 38) → Sai of Enlightenment (100, atk 40). After level 100, attack stays at 40-41 until level 250 where Cobra Bo/Eldritch jump to 42. The real endgame starts at level 300 with Falcon Sai/Naga Katar (43 atk).
Imbuement Priority
Monks use Punch imbuements (Fist Fighting skill boost) where other vocations use Slash/Bash/Chop. Priority order for your first imbuement budget:
- #1Weapon + HelmetPowerful PunchFist Fighting +4. Raw skill directly boosts all damage — your #1 priority.
- #2WeaponPowerful VampirismHP leech. Critical for solo hunting survivability.
- #3Weapon or HelmetPowerful VoidMana leech. Keeps mana topped for constant spell rotation.
- #4WeaponPowerful Strike10% chance for +25% damage. Good after core imbues are covered.
- #5Armor + LegsElemental ProtectionChoose based on spawn — Fire (Dragon Hide), Ice (Quara Scale), etc.
💡 TYPICAL IMBUE LOADOUT
Weapon (3 slots): Punch + Vampirism + Void (or Strike)
Helmet (2 slots): Punch + Void
Armor (2 slots): Elemental Protection based on spawn
This gives you +8 Fist Fighting skill, HP leech, mana leech, and spawn-specific protection.
Solo Hunting Spots
Drag the level slider to find spots for your character
Monks are melee fighters similar to Knights, but with more AoE damage and passive self-healing. Solo monks are always Serene, giving maximum Virtue power. Bookmark spots to earn the Hunt Scout achievement.
💡 MONK HUNTING ADVANTAGE
Monks are always Serene when solo, so your Virtues are at full power. Virtue of Justice gives you +16% Fist Fighting while Serene, and Virtue Healing constantly tops you off between pulls. Combined with Flurry of Blows AoE, monks can clear spawns faster than Knights at comparable levels while maintaining better sustain through passive healing.
Team Hunting & Party Role
The Monk brings a unique hybrid DPS/off-healer role to team hunts. Understanding where you fit in a party is crucial for maximum effectiveness.
THE MONK'S PARTY ROLE
- Primary: Melee DPS — Harmony builder/spender rotation deals significant AoE and single-target damage
- Secondary: Off-Healer — Virtue Healing passively heals the lowest HP% party member every time you build or spend Harmony (zero mana cost)
- Utility: Mentor Other buffs each party member based on their vocation, Balanced Brawl forces enemies into melee range, Enlighten Party restores party mana
5-MAN PARTY (NEW META)
- EK (Tank) + ED (Main Healer)
- MS (DPS) + RP (DPS)
- Monk (DPS + Off-Heal)
- Monk uses Virtue of Sustain for healing
- Virtue Healing supplements ED's healing
4-MAN KITE (EMERGING META)
- ED (Kiter/Healer) + MS (DPS)
- RP (DPS) + Monk (DPS/Healer)
- No EK — party kites instead of tanking
- Monk stays away from 6+ monster threshold
- Balanced Brawl controls mob positioning
MONK CANNOT REPLACE DRUID
Restore Balance (monk's target heal / "sio") has a 2-second cooldownversus the Druid's 1-second cooldown. In demanding endgame content where a Knight takes heavy damage, this difference is fatal. Monks supplement healing but should not be the sole healer in hard spawns.
💡 MENTOR OTHER PRIORITY
In a 5-man party, prioritize Mentor Other on:
1. Sorcerer (+5% spell/rune damage) — biggest overall DPS gain
2. Druid (+5% healing) — safer hunts in hard content
3. Knight (-3% damage taken) — good for survival in hard spawns
The 50-second cooldown means you can only buff one person at a time.
The Way of the Monk Quest
The Way of the Monk is the most important quest for the Monk vocation. It unlocks 5 exclusive spells and grants auto attack bonuses from 10 Ancient Shrines (5 give 5% each = 25% auto attack bonus, doubled to 50% while Serene).
QUEST-EXCLUSIVE SPELLS
- Lesser Mystic Repulse — lvl 6, Shrine of Might (Dawnport)
- Mystic Repulse — lvl 30, Shrine of Respect (Tyrsung)
- Forceful Uppercut — lvl 110, Shrine of Knowledge (Black Serpent Dungeon)
- Focus Harmony — lvl 275, Shrine of Eternity (Kilmaresh Mountains)
For the complete walkthrough, see our Way of the Monk Quest Guide.
Wheel of Destiny — Ascetic Perk
The AsceticRevelation Perk is the Monk's unique Wheel of Destiny perk. It has 3 stages:
- Stage 1: +1% Harmony base bonus + auto attacks deal 100% of Mantra damage
- Stage 2: +2% Harmony base bonus + auto attacks deal 200% of Mantra damage
- Stage 3: +3% Harmony base bonus + auto attacks deal 300% of Mantra damage
ASCETIC IS NOT DOUBLED BY SERENE
Unlike Virtue bonuses, the Ascetic perk's bonus is notaffected by the Serene state. The +3% Harmony base bonus is always +3% regardless of whether you're Serene or not. However, the auto attack Mantra damage bonus still benefits indirectly from higher Fist Fighting via Virtue of Justice.
Monks can also earn up to 10 extra Wheel of Destiny points through The Way of the Monk Quest.
Pro Tips & Common Mistakes
💡 GENERAL ROTATION RULES
1. Always spend Harmony at 5 stacks — the bonus doubles per point (7/14/28/56/112%), so 5-stack spender = ~16× a 1-stack spender.
2. AoE priority: Flurry of Blows (lvl 35) and Greater Flurry of Blows (lvl 90) are your best AoE builders. Sweeping Takedown (lvl 60) is your AoE spender.
3. Single-target priority: Double Jab (lvl 14) → Greater Tiger Clash (lvl 18). At 125+ swap the spender to Devastating Knockout.
4. Never use runes— runes don't generate Harmony and break your entire rotation economy.
💡 FOCUS SERENITY COMBO (LVL 150+)
Focus Serenity instantly gives max Harmony + forces Serene + resets all spender cooldowns. Use it to immediately follow up with your strongest spender for burst damage. With Virtue of Harmony active, the refunded Harmony lets you chain into another spender right after.
💡 SWEEPING TAKEDOWN POSITIONING (LVL 60+)
Sweeping Takedown hits a 3×2 rectangle in front of you + a connected 3×2 rectangle at 75% damage — a 6-long × 3-wide strip in the direction you face. The #1 mistake is casting it on a scattered group and hitting only 3-4 creatures. To maximise the 5-stack spend:
1. Pull creatures into a corridor or against a wall so they stack in a line, then face down the line.
2. Cast after they finish their move-tick — monsters mid-movement often slip out of the rear 3×2 box.
3. Face the direction with the most bodies, not the closest single creature.
4. In open spawns, use Exani Hur / stairs to funnel a stack before spending.
See our dedicated Sweeping Takedown positioning guide for corridor maps and per-spawn setups.
COMMON MISTAKES
1. Using runes: Runes don't generate Harmony. Your entire rotation depends on builder spells.
2. Wrong Virtue: Don't use Virtue of Sustain solo unless you need survival — Justice gives much more DPS.
3. Ignoring Serene positioning: In team hunts, 6+ adjacent monsters breaks Serene. Don't stand on the Knight's box.
4. Skipping Way of the Monk: The auto attack bonuses (up to 50% Serene) and exclusive spells are massive. Prioritize this quest.
💡 LEVELING AS KNIGHT FIRST
A common strategy is to level as a Knight from 2-19 on Dawnport, then switch to Monk at level 20 when you reach the mainland. Knights use shields which give better mitigation in the early levels where monks don't have their full toolkit yet.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Monk good for beginners?
The Monk has a higher skill floor than Knight or Paladin due to the Harmony builder/spender system. Beginners should learn the game basics with a simpler vocation first, but the Monk is very rewarding once you learn the rotation.
How does Monk compare to Knight for solo hunting?
Monks have better AoE through Flurry of Blows and Sweeping Takedown, plus passive self-healing via Virtue Healing. Knights have better raw tankiness through shield blocking. At comparable levels, monks tend to clear faster with slightly less safety.
What Virtue should I use for bosses?
Virtue of Justice for maximum damage output. Switch to Virtue of Sustain only if you're struggling to survive. For team boss fights, Sustain can be valuable to supplement the Druid's healing.
Can I PvP as a Monk?
Monks have strong burst potential (Focus Serenity into Devastating Knockout at 5 Harmony) and Balanced Brawl can force ranged attackers into melee. However, they lack the ranged control of Paladins or Sorcerers.
What is Mantra and how does it work?
Mantra is a stat found on monk-specific gear (robes, bandanas, amulets). It provides bonus auto attack damage, especially when combined with the Ascetic Wheel of Destiny perk which scales auto attack damage by 100-300% of your Mantra value.
When should I start The Way of the Monk Quest?
Start as early as possible. The first shrine (Dawnport) is accessible at level 6, giving you Lesser Mystic Repulse immediately. Visit each shrine as you hit the level requirements — the auto attack bonuses and spells are too valuable to delay.
